The Role:As part of the Everseen legal & compliance team and reporting to the VP, General Counsel & Secretary, this key hire will have a unique opportunity to fulfill a dual capacity position:
- as the statutory Data Protection Officer (DPO) ensuring legal compliance and independence per GDPR and related laws, and
- as the Lead Privacy Counsel serving as the legal subject matter expert for privacy advice and governance within the Legal team.

- As Everseen's dedicated DPO, you will fulfill all obligations required by the GDPR and relevant data protection laws, operating independently to advise and monitor privacy compliance within the organization.
- Advise the organization and its employees on Company obligations under GDPR / other data protection laws (e.g., US State laws/UK).
- Monitor compliance with data protection legislation and organizational policies, including oversight of internal privacy activities, staff privacy training, internal privacy audits, and undertaking of necessary Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs).
- Serve as the main point of contact for, and cooperate with regulatory authorities for privacy and for individuals (data subjects) regarding privacy matters, including handling queries and complaints.
- Provide advice on, and monitor, DPIAs, especially for projects with high privacy risk.
- Inform and raise awareness within the organization regarding data protection issues, ensuring staff training and fostering a privacy-aware culture.
- Maintain a record of processing operations and ensure proper documentation of compliance efforts.
- Assess, and report on personal data breaches, and support organization with corresponding mitigation strategies.
- Maintain independence in the role: the DPO will report to the Chief Financial Officer and must not be instructed in the execution of their tasks or penalized for performance of their duties.
Lead Privacy Counsel
- As Lead Privacy Counsel, you will serve as the legal subject matter expert for privacy advice and governance, providing appropriate expertise and execution support to the General Counsel & legal team on all privacy matters not reserved for the DPO.
- Act as the principal point of contact on privacy matters for the General Counsel, counseling on new products, services, and business initiatives from a privacy and data governance perspective.
- Guide the organization in developing, implementing, and maintaining robust privacy strategies and frameworks to meet evolving regulatory and business demands worldwide.
- Assist the legal team in drafting appropriate data privacy provisions with the organization's template agreements, offering advice and guidance where required.
- Draft internal privacy-related policies and memos in accordance with good industry practice.
- Draft and negotiate DPAs with customers, serving as a point of contact for customer data privacy queries.
- Advise on the intersection of privacy with AI governance, cybersecurity, records management, and cross-border data transfer strategies.
- Monitor developments in global privacy legislation, informing and updating the business and legal leadership accordingly.
- Work closely with the General Counsel on the company's adoption of the NIST privacy framework as the basis for its approach to privacy.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and advise business units on day-to-day privacy questions, escalations, and incident management.
- Work with the General Counsel to oversee privacy-related regulatory investigations, litigation, and risk management activities (excluding specific DPO tasks).
- Help design and maintain privacy collateral, communications, awareness campaigns, and training for the business and legal function.
- Support the General Counsel in providing strategic direction on privacy approach, privacy risk and corporate governance.
- The role reports functionally as DPO to the CFO, and operationally as Lead Privacy Counsel to the General Counsel (with a clear separation of duties to avoid conflicts of interest).
- Qualified lawyer with 7+ years PQE
- Subject matter expertise in privacy/data protection (ideally with in-house and DPO experience or within private practice as a privacy specialist).
- Deep understanding of: GDPR and DPO responsibilities and US privacy landscape, UK privacy law and global privacy trends.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and project management skills.
- Certification such as CIPP/E, CIPP/US, or similar preferred.
