Job Description:Under the general direction of the City Attorney, the Deputy City Attorney will assist the City Attorney in providing a wide range of legal services to the municipality, including legal research, drafting legal documents, and representing the city in various legal proceedings. This position requires a deep understanding of municipal law, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with city officials and departments. Works with outside legal counsel providing specialized services to the City; coordinates assigned activities with City Attorney, other City officials and departments, outside agencies, and organizations; and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the City Attorney.

Education/Training:
All candidates must possess or receive a J.D. or equivalent degree by the date of hire
Experience:
No minimum experience practicing law required. Desirable experience includes: at least one (1) year of experience practicing in areas of law relevant to the representation of New Mexico governmental entities; Experience representing New Mexico municipalities, or other similar governmental entities, either as an employee, contract attorney, or for a law firm that is contracted to do work for such entity; legal experience in a broad range of areas of law including open meetings, public records, government contracting, public procurement, labor and employee relations, civil rights, tort claims, land use, utilities, and prosecution of criminal offenses; experience drafting legal documents including ordinances, resolutions, policies and procedures, contracts, joint powers agreements, leases and land conveyancing documents, administrative and judicial pleadings, and legal opinions.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid driver's license. Must be admitted to practice by the Supreme Court of the State of New Mexico at the date of hire (preferred) or no later than six months after the date of hire. Academic background, performance, standing and related credentials or awards will be considered, but are not determinative. Active membership in the State Bar of New Mexico.
