Description:
Overview:The Risk Counsel serves as legal counsel to the Risk Department, providing guidance to internal stakeholders and the liability department, sharing best practices to mitigate legal risk and aid in crafting defense strategies while adhering to corporate policies, procedures and initiatives. You will partner with liability claims adjusters and external counsel, assisting with reviewing and collaboratively developing claims strategies in anticipation of litigation, making legal recommendations for consideration, and providing corporate expertise relative to the defense of litigated liability claims. This role involves a high level of collaboration with corporate counsel, national counsel, and other stakeholders to strategize on generalized and specific liability claim risk, including creating legal strategies to protect our brands.
This position is located at our Corporate Headquarters in Clayton, MO.

Responsibilities:
- We are hiring now for immediate openings. Responsibilities include:
- Serve as legal counsel to the Risk Department, providing guidance to internal stakeholders and liability team, sharing best practices to mitigate legal risk and aid in crafting negotiation strategies while adhering to corporate directives, policies and procedures
- Partner with internal stakeholders and the Corporate Legal Group to identify potential risk factors and provide suggestions to resolve complex matters involving generalized risk
- Proactively research claim specific and general risk related legal topics and interpret to determine options for appropriate application in our business lines, formulate and document legal opinions, incorporating into a legal library for future recommendations
- Build relationships with vendors and outside counsel to assist with recommending clear direction, monitor requested services, and ensure adherence to internal best practices
- Conduct/participate in deposition preparation of and assist in selection of deponents for litigated claim matters
- Review/revise draft motions submitted by outside counsel relating to claim litigation
- Update leadership and key stakeholders of potential claim-related legal exposures and risk compliance obligations
- Collaborate with corporate counsel, national counsel, and other stakeholders to strategize on generalized and specific liability claim risk, including legal strategies to mitigate individual claim risk
- Guide and train in-house and external claim handlers on management of defense attorneys and legal strategy, selection and maintenance of approved counsel and legal expert panels and effective litigation cost containment strategies
- Lead and collaborate on other project-based work within the scope of the Risk Department responsibilities as needed

Qualifications:
Required:
- Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school
- Admission to at least one state Bar in the United States
- Seven (7+) years of liability defense experience in private practice or relevant in-house defense
- Advanced knowledge of litigation processes and procedures, litigation strategy to include proficiency with motion review, etc.
- Advanced proficiency with legal research
- Must be authorized to work in the United States and not require work authorization sponsorship by our company for this position now or in the future
Preferred:
- Product liability defense experience
- Insurance coverage litigation experience
- Trial experience
- Prior experience with Westlaw
- Experience managing and developing employees, either direct or indirect
