General Purpose:
The Corporate Counsel, Employment and Litigation is a strategic, hands-on role for a mid-level attorney with significant employment and labor law experience who likes to build and thrives in a high-growth, fast-paced environment. You will support the Employment Practices Legal team by partnering closely with business leaders and the human resources teams to advise on workforce compliance, policy development and implementation, and labor and employment risk management. In this role, you will help guide the company through complex employment matters while building scalable frameworks that support growth and stability. This position can be remote for California-based applicants. All other applicants will be required to locate to Salt Lake City, Utah.Key Outcome (12–24 MONTHS)
Demonstrate Measurable Reduction in Legal & Employment Risk
- Reduce frequency and severity of employment claims filed against facilities in the state of California through proactive legal counseling and risk mitigation initiatives
- Improve outcomes in wage and hour, PAGA, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation matters
- Identify trends through claims data and partner with leadership on targeted preventative action plans
Develop standardized playbooks, templates, and processes for improving wage and hour compliance, beginning with California and extending to other states that are adopting PAGA-like frameworks

- Build strong credibility and influence across Legal, HR, Operations, and senior leadership, especially with regard to wage and hour issues
- Serve as a strategic contributor on sensitive employee matters, organizational changes, and workforce initiatives

Core Responsibilities:
Employment Litigation & Claims
- Manage and support employment-related claims in California, including wage and hour disputes, wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and PAGA matters
- Assist in responding to administrative agency charges (e.g., EEOC, DFEH/CRD, Labor Commissioner) originating in California
- Draft pre-litigation position statements and settlement agreements
- Partner with HR and internal stakeholders on pre-litigation dispute resolution and risk mitigation
- Assist in handling broader litigation matters, including commercial disputes, consumer claims, and regulatory inquiries as needed
- Conduct legal research and draft memoranda, pleadings, and discovery responses
- Support case strategy development and fact investigations
- Provide practical legal advice to HR and business teams on employee relations matters as well as employment practices and policies
- Help develop and update employment-related policies, procedures, and training materials
- Identify trends in claims and recommend proactive risk mitigation strategies
- Coordinate with outside counsel on employment litigation matters, including managing deadlines, strategy alignment, and budgets
- Support document preservation, litigation holds, and e-discovery processes
- Maintain organized case files and assist with reporting and tracking of claims
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
- Active membership in the California bar
- Experience handling employment claims as either plaintiff or defense counsel, including wage and hour and PAGA claims
- Strong knowledge of federal and state employment laws (e.g., FLSA, Title VII, ADA, FEHA, wage and hour laws, PAGA)
- Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills
- Ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines in a fast-paced environment with heavy utilization of LegalTracker
- Strong judgment and problem-solving skills
- Ability to translate legal risk into practical business guidance
- Collaborative and cross-functional mindset
- High attention to detail and organizational skills
- Strong ability for prioritization of multiple competing matters
- Effective communication and stakeholder management
- 5+ years of experience
Physical Demands:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer (typically 6–8 hours per day). Ability to stand or walk around the office environment as needed.
- Must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing legal documents, viewing a computer monitor, and extensive reading. Must be able to communicate effectively over the phone, via video conferencing, and in person.
- Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, telephone, and other standard office equipment (copy machines, scanners).
- Minimal physical effort required; occasionally lifting or moving lightweight items such as legal files, laptops, or office supplies (typically up to 10–15 lbs.).
- The role is performed in a professional, climate-controlled office environment with a moderate noise level. It requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage stress effectively due to competing deadlines and heavy caseloads.
