The Chief Deputy Director/General Counsel reports directly to the BSCC Executive Director and is part of the agency's executive leadership team. The monthly salary range is $13,770 - $17,102. The salary may be modified in accordance with applicable Cal HR guidelines.

This position is an exciting and challenging opportunity for an experienced attorney and leader who is interested in managing the policy function of the Board; providing legal advice and counsel to the BSCC Board and overseeing the Board's legal responsibilities; overseeing legal assistance and advice to the BSCC programs and staff; conducting legal analysis and research, reviewing legal documents, preparing correspondence involving the explanation of legal matters and preparing legal opinions; advising on critical legal matters, and ensuring compliance with state and federal laws.

As part of BSCC's executive leadership team, this position will also offer the candidate the opportunity to be part of the organization's broader policy and decision-making function.
The BSCC is a key partner in California's state and local correctional system. It is a state level government entity responsible for setting compliance standards for local corrections agencies, including sheriffs' departments, police departments, and probation departments. In addition, the BSCC administers over $400 million annually in more than 25 grant programs and 700 active grant contracts. Support diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of BSCC activities. Interpret and apply state and federal law, budget language, regulations and policies related to grant and program evaluation.
The Chief Deputy Director/General Counsel oversees all policy development on behalf of the agency. This position is also responsible for supervising all of the BSCC's legal staff, exercising creativity, innovation, and vision to assist with amplifying the BSCC's mission and vision. Candidates should have a good understanding of the political and policy climate in the State of California. Special Requirements:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Membership in the State Bar of California. (Applicants must have active membership in the State Bar before they will be eligible for appointment.)
