Description:Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick LLP has an opportunity for a highly motivated associate to join our sophisticated Bankruptcy, Insolvency & Creditors' Rights practice in the Charlotte, NC, office. This is an exceptional opportunity to work on complex restructurings and insolvencies (including Chapter 11 and cross-border restructurings) as well as commercial disputes while representing national and global clients across a diverse range of industries.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years of bankruptcy, insolvency, and/or restructuring experience, including bankruptcy-related litigation. This position provides the chance to work on complex transactions while delivering practicable business guidance to clients facing financial risk with counterparties, customers, or supply chain.
We are looking for candidates who take a proactive approach and ownership of their work. Candidates must have a strong commitment to client service and want to develop and grow their bankruptcy and litigation skills by working alongside exceptional attorneys.
Where You'll Work
This is an in-person position in the Charlotte, NC, office.
What You'll Do:
- Represent national and international clients in Chapter 11 proceedings, out-of-court restructurings, and related commercial disputes
- Conduct legal research and provide strategic recommendations to internal teams and clients
- Draft pleadings, motions, legal memoranda, and related filings in federal bankruptcy court
- Support senior attorneys on sophisticated restructurings, workouts, and insolvency-related transactions
- Participate in depositions, hearings and negotiations commensurate with experience
- Manage caseload efficiently while meeting deadlines and billable requirements
What We're Looking For:
- Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the North Carolina Bar (or the ability to waive in)
- A minimum of 2 years of creditor-side bankruptcy, restructuring or commercial litigation experience is required
- Candidates who have commercial litigation experience and a desire to focus on bankruptcy and creditors' rights work will be considered on a case-by-case basis
- Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills including a strong aptitude for managing and prioritizing multiple projects and deadlines
- Candidates should be comfortable handling depositions and court appearances, commensurate with experience
- A thorough knowledge and understanding of federal rules of procedure
- Ability to work with a variety of attorneys and staff, and maintain a high degree of confidentiality
- Prior bankruptcy clerkship experience is a plus, but not required

Physical Requirements:
- Sitting frequently, approximately six out of eight hours per day. Sitting position static for up to one-half hour at a time.
- Standing or walking frequently, up to six hours per day.
- Lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds occasionally, up to one hour per day.
- Bending and stooping occasionally, up to one-half hour per day.
