This position is headquartered at our Madison office at 2135 Rimrock Road. The position has the ability to work remotely up to 3 days per week but will be required to report to the Madison office at least 2 days per week. This schedule may vary based on training or operational needs.

Position Summary:
This position will supervise a staff of litigation attorneys; provide legal advice and counsel to the DOR Secretary's Office, divisions and bureaus within the Department; participate in the formulation, determination and implementation of management policy; and represents or coordinates representation of the Department before the Wisconsin Tax Appeals Commission, administrative hearing examiners and courts on all agency matters.

Salary Information:
The starting pay rate for this position is between $52.20 – $61.32 per hour ($108.576 and $127,545 annually), depending on experience and qualifications. You will also receive an additional hourly add-on of $2.75 per hour for supervising attorney staff.
The classification of this position is Attorney Supervisor, which is in Pay Schedule 71, Pay Range 01. Pay will be set in accordance with the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan in effect at the time of hire. Starting pay for current state employees may vary based on applicable provisions in the Compensation Plan. For current employees transferring or promoting into this supervisory role, the current compensation plan allows an increase up to $61.32 per hour rate or an increase up to $6.84 per hour from the current pay rate.

Background Checks: Due to the nature of this position, final candidates will be subject to criminal background, fingerprint, and tax compliance checks.
I-9 Requirements: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of appointment. The Department of Revenue does not sponsor work or student visas and is not an eligible OPT employer for those with F1 visas. DOR participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I-9 information for all new employees to confirm authorization to work in the U.S.
Probationary Period: A 12month probationary will be required.
Qualifications:
Minimum qualified candidates will have each of the following:
- Possession of a license to practice law in the State of Wisconsin (WI); OR will be licensed to practice law in the state of WI prior to the appointment date, and describes this ability in the application materials (e.g., currently licensed to practice law in another state and have applied for license to practice in WI.).
- Experience researching, analyzing, and interpreting laws and regulations.
- Experience drafting legal documents (e.g., pleadings, briefs, legal opinions, etc.).
- Experience providing legal advice and representation on complex legal issues. Complex legal issues may involve intricate regulatory structures, analysis across multiple authorities (such as state law, administrative rules, federal law and/or regulations), or legal issues with significant impact across populations.
- Experience litigating tax issues.
- Experience litigating civil matters (e.g., summary judgement motions, discovery motions, etc.).
- Experience leading, supervising, or managing employees.
- Experience working with complex corporate franchise and pass-through entity tax issues.
- Experience working with personnel law.
