The Attorney advises and represents Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office (OPSO) in relation to their legal rights in civil and criminal cases. Their duties include meeting with the Chief Legal Officer to discuss the various aspects of OPSO cases, performing research to gather pertinent information for each case and attending all pretrial hearings. Work to resolve disputes for OPSO, represent OPSO at hearings in a court of law.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides legal support and guidance in civil litigation against OPSO.
  • Research and investigate the details of a case on behalf of OPSO.
  • Gather evidence to be used in a trial to defend OPSO against a lawsuit.
  • Meeting with OPSO at the remand or office to critically discuss the pending charges and strategize on how best to defend OPSO.
  • Communication with OPSO to understand their legal concerns and needs to help provide them with essential pieces of advice.
  • Strategizing on how to resolve OPSO cases in a favorable and cost-effective manner.
  • Advising OPSO about legal options and making them know the possible outcomes or threats.
  • Representing the Sheriff in criminal legal proceedings.
  • Staying informed about any current legislation.
  • Conducting depositions.
  • Preparing legal documents such as dispositions, pleadings and contracts in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Collecting retainers and executing contracts.
