Job Description:
The Nebraska Tax Equalization & Review Commission. The Commission is an intermediate appellate tribunal hearing approximately 1,500 appeals annually of decisions made by 93 county boards of equalization. In relation to appeals, the Commissioners function as administrative law judges. The Commission also conducts an annual review of the equalization of all real property in all 93 counties.
This is a full-time on-site role for an Attorney at the State of Nebraska Tax Equalization & Review Commission located in Lincoln, NE. The Attorney will be responsible for processing daily motions, including discovery, dismissals, continuances, and confessions of judgment by coordinating with the Chairman and staff. These tasks require prompt and effective action on a daily basis as well as immediate updates to the Commission's calendar. On an ongoing basis, the attorney will review drafts of orders prepared by Commissioners and will provide some first drafts of orders for Commissioners to review. In this respect, the attorney role is largely similar to that of a judicial clerk.
The attorney will also assist with management and maintenance of case files, an appeals database, electronic documents, an official web site, and scheduling hearings. The attorney will serve as the point of contact to the Nebraska Court of Appeals and the Department of Justice.
Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience and will range from $70,000 to $90,000.
Requirements/Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
- Admission to the Bar in Nebraska
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3 years experience in administrative law
- Desired familiarity and knowledge of principles of statutory interpretation
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong organization skills
- Ability to prioritize tasks on a daily and ongoing basis
- Strong editing and writing skills
- Strong legal research skills
- Good communication skills with taxpayers and their lay or legal representatives
- Professionalism with the Commissioners and Commission staff
