General Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Director of Legal Services or their designee, responsible for the provision of legal services to eligible individuals and groups; maintains caseload; represents clients before courts and administrative agencies; provides legal advice, assistance, and negotiation. Supervises and trains students and new attorneys as appropriate. Maintains required records.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provides a full range of legal services in a competent and timely manner. These services include:
    • Administrative hearings before public and private agencies and authorities
    • Litigations in state and federal courts
    • Appellate Practice
    • Drafting pleadings and other legal documents
    • Obtaining and reviewing documents and records
    • Legal research and writing
    • Negotiating and settling matters
    • Interviewing clients and providing appropriate advice
    • Referral to other sources of legal assistance and social services
  • Provides legal information, education and assistance to social workers, senior centers and community agencies both virtually and in person including evenings as needed;
  • Maintains required case records, reports and statistics in a timely and complete manner;
  • Reassess clients' needs on an ongoing basis and revises case plans as appropriate;
  • Participates in staff meetings, program planning and conferences;
  • Staff legal clinics and workshops throughout the community both virtually and in-person; and
  • Handles special assignments and duties and other tasks as assigned.

In addition to the duties and responsibilities set forth above, additional Attorney II duties and responsibilities include:
  • Trains and supervises students, new attorneys, and volunteer staff;
  • Develops and coordinates outreach and training, conducting legal information, outreach, education and training in the community to professionals and older adults both virtually and in person including evenings as needed; and
  • Litigate and Co-counsel impact litigation and class actions.

Requirements:
  • Ability to handle large individual caseload and complex litigation, including class actions, impact litigation and appeals.
  • Minimum of 3 years prior relevant legal experience required.
  • NYS Admission or admission to another state bar with pending admission to the New York Bar and Graduate of accredited law school with J.D. Degree.
  • Prior legal experience involving law and older adults preferred.
  • Excellent writing/record keeping skills.
  • Must be computer literate, including ability to learn and use program-specific software.
  • Travel to clients' homes as needed.
