DEPARTMENT PURPOSE
Our Sanctions and International Trade team helps organizations across sectors navigate the legal and regulatory challenges and opportunities of doing business in a globalized economy. Our market-leading team provides integrated, cross-jurisdictional advice and is well versed in the most complex and sensitive issues arising in the market. Our unique insight on these issues repeatedly proves invaluable to our clients. We have an integrated, global team of lawyers who work together daily on a wide variety of complex, cross-border matters. We are best known for providing integrated cross-jurisdictional trade advice on complex matters involving overlapping and often conflicting requirements and prohibitions.

Role Purpose:
A&O Shearman seeks an accomplished, experienced associate to join its Sanctions practice. Ideal candidates will be in Washington DC or in our New York office with 3-6 years of robust experience with respect to matters involving U.S. economic sanctions and export controls. Qualified candidates will receive immediate client exposure and will see great responsibility and join a team dedicated to training and development. Successful candidates will have excellent drafting and analytical skills, accurate and strong attention to detail, high level of organization, strong verbal and interpersonal skills, and an ability to manage multiple projects and people.

Role and Responsibilities:
  • Advise clients on compliance, transactional, regulatory matters
  • Counsel clients on export controls and matters involving the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) and the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)
  • Contact clients and manage deals

Minimum Requirements:
  • A Juris Doctor (JD) degree (LLM or foreign equivalent) from an accredited law school.
  • Must be admitted, and in good standing, to the bar in the jurisdiction in which you will practice; or must provide written confirmation as to ability to become admitted in that State or District.

Preferred Requirements:
  • Analytical, research, and writing skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage your time effectively.
  • Class years 2022-2019
  • Salary range: $260,000 to $390,000
