Joyner Law is hiring an Associate Attorney for our Wytheville office. We handle felony, misdemeanor, and traffic matters across Montgomery, Pulaski, Wythe, Carroll, Bland, Smyth, and Washington Counties. Our attorneys are in court constantly, and this position offers the kind of trial experience that takes years to accumulate elsewhere.

This is a working trial practice. You will carry your own docket with substantial autonomy, backed by direct mentorship from experienced criminal defense attorneys. Both new admittees and experienced attorneys are encouraged to apply. Criminal and traffic experience is not required.

The office is in Wytheville, but the practice covers the New River Valley and southwest Virginia broadly. Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Radford, Abingdon, and the surrounding region are all realistic places to live.

Compensation:

Base salary: $65,000 – $75,000, depending on experience
Criminal case compensation: 25% of fees collected — typically $12,000 – $25,000 annually, depending on caseload
Year-end bonus: performance-based, typically 5–10% of salary
First-year total compensation generally runs $75,000 – $100,000, with standard annual raises thereafter

Health insurance: the attorney's coverage paid in full by the firm (roughly a $6,000 annual value)
Retirement: SIMPLE IRA with 100% firm match up to 3% of compensation
Mileage: reimbursed at the full IRS rate (currently $0.76/mile), which for our attorneys works out to roughly $1,000 per month
Unlimited PTO
Parental leave: 12 weeks — 6 weeks fully paid, followed by either 6 weeks unpaid or 6 weeks at full pay on a 60% schedule
Professional expenses: bar dues, CLE, and malpractice insurance covered
Advancement: a structured promotion track through senior associate and partner levels. We will walk through the specifics during the interview process.

What We're Looking For:

Admission to the Virginia State Bar. Candidates with pending admission or who intend to waive in will be considered.
A willingness to learn and to take on real responsibility early
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
The ability to manage a high-volume docket efficiently once trained
Comfort with regular travel among regional courthouses
