An established Hampton Roads AV-rated law firm based in Portsmouth is seeking an Associate Attorney with 2–5 years of practice experienceto join its Collections and Creditors' Rights Department. We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented professional with a focus on collections to become an integral part of our legal team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in collections and creditors' rights and demonstrate the ability to manage complex matters and effectively lead a team.

In this role, the Associate will lead and advance collection matters through strategic legal analysis, negotiation, and enforcement of creditors' rights, while ensuring strict compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Duties:
  • Manage a caseload of debt collection matters from initiation through resolution, ensuring timely follow-up, compliance, and accurate documentation
  • Draft, review, and negotiate settlement agreements, payment plans, and other legal documents related to collection cases
  • Appear in court (Circuit Court and General District Court) and assist in litigation proceedings, including preparing pleadings, discovery requests, and related correspondence
  • Communicate effectively with clients, debtors, courts, and third-party agencies to facilitate collections and resolve disputes
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and oversight to a paralegal and legal assistant

Skills and Qualifications:
  • The ideal candidate must be admitted to the Virginia Bar and be in good standing
  • Demonstrate proficiency technology
  • Strong knowledge of legal research tools for case analysis and legal writing
  • Excellent negotiation skills to reach amicable resolutions while protecting client interests
  • Proficiency in legal drafting, including pleadings, motions, settlement agreements, and correspondence
  • Experience with litigation processes from filing to resolution in collection-related matters
  • Exceptional writing skills for clear and persuasive legal communication
  • Legal administrative experience managing case files and maintaining detailed records efficiently
