Description:

Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, the Assistant/Associate General Counsel will provide legal advice and counsel to MMC's executive leaders and other senior executives, managers, directors, and administrators. The successful candidate will have significant experience in diverse areas of health care practice, including corporate and commercial transactions, general health and hospital law, and regulatory compliance.

The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of significant experience handling a breadth of health care and hospital issues. The successful candidate must also have experience advising a health care system, as internal or external counsel, experience identifying and helping to resolve health care regulatory issues, and a demonstrated understanding of physician/hospital relationships. Proven strong client service, project management, problem solving, negotiation, change management, and excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.

Detailed Responsibilities:
  • In collaboration with attorneys in the department, provide advice and counsel in diverse areas of health care practice, including compliance and regulatory matters, corporate and commercial transactions, governance, physician practice, patient care issues, and health care financial matters.
  • Review and draft institutional policies and forms.
  • Manage internal and government investigations
  • Advise the hospital's Board of Trustees, through its committees, on governance issues, as well as health care and other applicable laws and regulations.
  • Build and maintain strong and effective relationships with business partners; become an organizational leader and a trusted advisor.
  • Proactively monitor and provide guidance and counsel with respect to industry trends, and state, city, and national regulatory developments.
  • Effectively work with and manage outside counsel.

Key Qualifications:
  • JD degree from an accredited law school.
  • Currently licensed as an attorney in New York State or eligible to become either a member of the New York Bar or New York Registered In-House Counsel.
  • 5-10 years of expansive healthcare law experience representing hospitals, integrated healthcare systems, and/or healthcare provider groups with employed and/or contracted physicians.
  • Excellent academic record and experience at a respected law firm and/or in-house.
  • Demonstrated understanding of federal and New York health care regulatory issues, including but not limited to, fraud and abuse, reimbursement, informed consent, physician practice, and HIPAA/privacy issues.
  • Proven appreciation and grasp of health care operational and clinical issues.
