Description:

The Office of the Public Defender for the Fourth Judicial Circuit is seeking lawyers who are admitted to practice in Florida--or awaiting results from the most recent Florida Bar exam. The Office represents individuals in criminal and civil commitment proceedings who are entitled to court-appointed counsel under the Constitution, or under Florida statute. The Office represents individuals accused of committing criminal offenses, individuals who are subject to mental health commitments and individuals who are subject to civil commitment under the Jimmy Ryce Act. The Circuit includes Duval (Jacksonville), Clay and Nassau counties.

The ideal candidate is a well-rounded individual who is committed to doing criminal defense work and has the skills necessary to interact effectively with our client base. Candidates must have strong academic backgrounds. Trial court and/or mock trial experience is preferred. Activities as a student demonstrating a commitment to public service are considered favorably. The Public Defender's Office is committed to cultivating, promoting, and preserving a culture of inclusivity for all applicants.

The Office is also interested in summer intern candidates (CLI's and non-CLI's). If you have an interest in becoming a defender of the poor, reach out to our office. Salary is based upon experience depending upon whether the hired person is a Florida Bar license attorney, a Certified Legal Intern awaiting Florida Bar results, or an unpaid student intern.
