The University of Denver Sturm College of Law seeks applications from candidates for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor of Law to direct its Community Economic Development Clinic (CEDC). One of seven clinics within the law school's nationally recognized Student Law Office, the CEDC supports community-based revitalization and economic development initiatives by providing free legal services to nonprofit organizations, small businesses, and other community-based enterprises across a range of areas, including: drafting documents relating to business entity formation; assisting nonprofit organizations with applications for tax-exempt status; drafting and reviewing contracts; counseling nonprofit organizations and small businesses; and working with federal, state, and local governmental agencies. Students in the CEDC work closely with clients while developing core transactional, advisory, and regulatory practice skills transferable across a wide range of legal settings, including legal analysis, client counseling and communication, legal drafting, research and planning, project management, advocacy, collaboration, and navigating group dynamics in community-based work.

We seek candidates with J.D. degrees (or their equivalents), outstanding academic records, relevant professional experience, and the capacity to make future outstanding contributions in the realms of scholarship, teaching, and public engagement.

Position Summary:

Essential Functions:
  • Engage in outstanding and innovative teaching, imparting relevant doctrine knowledge and professional skills.
  • Undertake research and publish scholarly works; participate in faculty workshops, conferences, lectures, and other scholarly events; read and comment upon faculty works-in-progress; and publicize their scholarship to relevant internal and external audiences.
  • Contribute institutional service to the law school, the University, their particular legal field(s), the profession, and the public good.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with a variety of teaching methods
  • Outstanding teaching skills
  • Initiative and ability to work independently

Required Qualifications:
  • J.D. degree (or its equivalent)
  • Outstanding academic record
  • Relevant professional experience in counseling small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and/or community organizations
  • The capacity to make future outstanding contributions in the realms of scholarship, teaching, and public engagement

Working Environment:
  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities:
  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.

Work Schedule:
While the University's administrative offices are open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar).

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range:
The salary range for the Assistant Professor position is $140,000-$150,000.

The salary range for the Associate Professor position is $157,500-$167,500.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
