Duties Description
The Division of Human Rights is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Counsel working within Office of the General Counsel of the New York State Division of Human Rights. The Assistant Counsel will provide legal assistance and counsel on agency matters including personnel, legal records, and other administrative functions. Job duties include:
  • Analyzes and summarizes cases and information pertinent to constitutional provisions, statutes, rules, regulations, policies and opinions.
  • Serves as agency's point of contact for external oversight and legal entities, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Office of Employee Relations (OER), and the Attorney General's Office.
  • Represents the agency in legal proceedings, administrative hearings, and internal investigations.
  • Conducts legal reach and drafts guidance and legal opinions on state and federal law.
  • Provide counsel and assistance with discovery holds, records management, and Freedom of Information Law requests.
  • Performs additional duties associated with personnel, financial, legal records, and other administrative matters for the Office of General Counsel.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have been admitted to the New York State Bar and must have had two years of experience in the practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar.
