The A Government Entity and Reporter represents all state executives, officials, departments, boards, agencies, and commissions in matters arising from their public duties. Such representation includes participation in litigation, transactional matters, and giving day-to-day legal advice to a wide variety of State entities. The Attorney General's Office employs approximately 200 attorneys organized into 16 divisions within 5 sections.

Job Overview:
The Tennessee Attorney General's Office advises on and defends matters related to the State's open-meetings and public-records laws. The assistant attorney general in this position will have a well-rounded, busy practice that requires advising and counseling, as well as litigating. The attorney's primary job duties will include:
  • Providing legal advice to state agencies, entities, officials, and employees concerning Tennessee's public-records and open-meetings laws.
  • Litigating and resolving issues concerning Tennessee's public-records and open-meetings laws.
  • Advising boards and commissions and individual board members and commissioners concerning their responsibilities and processes.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate and Tennessee bar admission.
  • At least 5 years practicing law, with at least some litigation experience.
  • The ability to work as part of a team and to explain legal issues to non-attorneys.
  • Prior experience with state public records and open-meetings laws.
  • Prior experience advising boards and commissions.
