This is an exciting opportunity to join the Workers Compensation Fraud and Abuse Unit as an Assistant Attorney General who will review complaints for administrative, civil, or criminal prosecution and handle administrative prosecution of workers compensation fraud cases.
Primary Duties:
This Assistant Attorney General (AAG), employed by the mutual consent of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Office of the Kansas Attorney General will represent the State of Kansas in a caseload comprised of administrative fraud litigation. Key responsibilities include:
- Drafts statements of charges, summary orders, or other complaints and determines whether to seek prosecution of administrative or criminal case governed by established statutes and case law prompted by investigations of workers compensation violations; reviews case files to determine if violation of state law exists; negotiates with opposing counsel; review and interpret statutes, administrative regulations and precedents; work tactfully and effectively with administrative officials, local government officials, fellow employees and other state or federal officials
- Supervises three investigators and one administrative assistant and responds to legal questions, issues as needed
- Prosecutes case in administrative hearing, appears in administrative hearings or district court.
- Responds to consumer complaints and other outside agency inquiries
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited law school
- Certificate of admission to and membership in good standing with the Bar of the Supreme Court of Kansas
- At least three (3) years of experience as a licensed attorney
- A valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Workers Compensation litigation.
- Five (5) years of applicable litigation experience preferred.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of proper legal proceedings.
- Knowledge of the Kansas Workers Compensation Act and the associated statutes and regulations is essential.
- Knowledge of Kansas criminal law and procedure required.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with state and local law enforcement, insurance agents, insurance carriers, doctors, attorneys, employers, employees, claimants and the general public.
- This position also requires the ability to analyze the information provided in an investigative report, assess its importance and incorporate it into a clear and concise legal filing.
- Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and practices of legal research.
- Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication; organizational; analytical; and creative problem-solving skills required.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence and precedents concerning cases and to present such materials in clear and logical form for oral or written presentation, such as orders or pleadings.
- Ability to analyze legal documents and instruments.
- Ability to proactively identify, prioritize and resolve legal issues quickly and effectively.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, conflicting deadlines and possibly new areas of expertise as the law needs change.
- Ability to effectively communicate with and maintain favorable public relations and working relationships with administrative officials, local governmental officials, fellow employees, court officials and the public.
- Ability to write legal instruments, reports and correspondence.
- Ability to understand and interpret constitutional provisions, statutes, administrative regulations and precedents.
- Ability to work independently.
