Job Duties:
This attorney, based in Richmond, will serve as counsel and provide representation and advice to the Department of Health Professions and its Boards of Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Audiology and Speech Language Pathology, and Optometry. The position also represents the Health Practitioners' Monitoring Program.

The attorney will attend board meetings and serve as board counsel during informal and formal disciplinary proceedings conducted under the Virginia Administrative Process Act. Responsibilities include all aspects of litigation from defending board decisions on appeal in state court to representing the boards in federal court. The daily advice provided to the Boards will involve a variety of legal issues involving health law, confidentiality and privacy laws, the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, and the Virginia Administrative Process Act. This attorney will provide back-up to the attorneys representing the other Boards within the Department of Health Professions as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • The successful candidate must be a member of the Virginia Bar, possess excellent analytical, research, and writing ability, and demonstrate superior oral and written communication and litigation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
  • The optimal candidate will have at least five years of litigation experience, including appellate practice.
