Trial Division, Corrections Litigation Unit

The Trial Division of the Oregon Department of Justice is growing and is seeking applications for a permanent, full-time Assistant Attorney Generals (AAGs) in its Corrections Litigation Unit (CLU). An individual selected for this position will join a team of lawyers who represent the state, its agencies, officers, and employees in civil lawsuits in state and federal trial courts. The cases handled by a successful candidate will focus on a wide variety of civil claims filed by adults in custody at Oregon's correctional facilities including civil rights claims of access to courts, free speech, transgender rights, free exercise of religion, and use of force; and state tort claims related to medical care and personal injury. In addition, this unit covers claims of state habeas corpus in which adults in custody argue that their conditions of confinement do not meet federal and state constitutional standards.

DOJ Trial Division has developed flexible remote working capabilities. Corrections Litigation Unit AAGs are able to work remotely and from the office. Everyone works at least one day per week in the office, plus additional occasions when the requirements of the job make it necessary to be in the office or in court. This position can be based out of Portland or Salem.

Required:
  • Active membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar prior to appointment or reciprocity in progress at the time of application.
  • At least three years of experience litigating civil actions in state or federal court as an attorney.
  • Able to balance frequent court appearances and an active motions practice while maintaining excellent client communication.
  • Willing and available to travel throughout Oregon for court appearances when in trial.

  • Experience engaging in mediation and settlement negotiations.
