Job Summary:Edelman, Liesen & Myers, L.L.P., is currently seeking to hire an experienced Appellate and Trial Litigation Attorney.
We are a small civil rights and employment law firm who represents clients throughout Missouri and Kansas, with offices located in midtown Kansas City, Missouri. We are looking for a candidate who will take pride in the work our firm does and provide our clients with the highest level of respect.
Candidates should have experience working with appellate and litigation cases in a law firm or equivalent work experience, and must possess a solid working knowledge and understanding of the appellate and litigation process and issues. Appellate and/or trial experience is preferred. Pay is commiserate with experience.
Our firm is looking for someone who is comfortable working in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment, possesses the ability to work under the supervision of the partners of the firm. Must also be able to work independent of direct supervision and have sufficient skills to allow for successful problem-solving.
Responsibilities:
- Drafting and arguing in-court motions and briefings on the appellate and trial level.
- Prioritizing tasks, workflow and ensuring all deadlines are met.
- Maintaining privilege, confidentiality and use of discretion, while approaching all aspects of the position with integrity.
- Preparing Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and Missouri Commission on Human Rights (MCHR) filings.
- Preparing petitions, motions and other basic pleadings; reviewing court rules and eFiling with State, Federal, Appellate and Supreme Courts in Missouri and Kansas.
- Drafting discovery requests and objections; preparing written discovery responses with objections, indexing incoming document production and drafting golden rule letters.
- Preparing for and taking part in depositions.
- Assisting in trial support. Assisting with preparation of motions in limine, jury instructions, witness and exhibit lists; and assisting with voir dire as needed.
- Completing post-trial and appeal processes, including filing notices of appeals, drafting post-trial briefings, Motions for JNOV, Suggestions in Opposition for opposing party's briefings, and drafting appellate briefing.
Qualifications:
- Experience in appellate and trial litigation cases
- Must be highly organized, with meticulous attention to detail
- Juris Doctorate
- Admission to the Missouri and/or Kansas Bar
- Have no current or previous disciplinary record with a bar association in any State
- Must be diligent in recording time
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe, Gmail
- Excellent communication skills, including spelling and grammar
- Hard working and dependable
- Knowledgeable about the litigation and appellate process
- Excited to collaborate with a fun team on high-profile, important cases
- Pay determined commensurate with experience
- Familiarity with civil rights and employment law is a plus
