Carney Badley Spellman, PS, seeks an associate to join its appellate practice group. This is an opportunity to build strong appellate and litigation skills with a collaborative team known for exceptional advocacy in complex matters. Qualifications:
  • JD degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the Washington bar and in good standing
  • Recent judicial clerkship experience strongly preferred, especially with a state or federal appellate court
  • One to three years of civil litigation experience
  • Exceptional legal research, writing, and analytical skills (multiple writing samples required)
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to manage competing deadlines
  • Eagerness to take initiative, embrace increasing responsibility, and grow professionally.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, lawyers, and staff

Key Responsibilities:
  • Draft briefs, motions, and other written advocacy in trial and appellate matters
  • Research and analyze complex legal issues with care, precision, and sound judgment
  • Work closely with senior attorneys on case strategy, issue development, and written advocacy
  • Support trials as embedded appellate counsel, including drafting trial reports and assisting trial and client teams with appellate-focused issues
  • Develop oral-advocacy skills through increasing responsibility in trial and appellate matters
