Boulder Community Health (BCH) is seeking an experienced and strategic Chief Legal Officer (CLO) to lead all legal, compliance, and risk management functions for our award-winning, independent, nonprofit health system. As a key member of the executive team, the CLO serves as the primary legal advisor to the CEO, Board of Directors, and Senior Leadership—guiding organizational strategy while ensuring BCH's operations align with all legal and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from an ABA-accredited institution
  • Active and unrestricted license to practice law in the State of Colorado required
  • Significant professional experience practicing healthcare law in Colorado, with strong working knowledge of state-specific statutes, regulations, and regulatory bodies required
  • 10+ years of in-house counsel experience with leadership responsibilities or equivalent experience advising hospitals in a healthcare-focused law firm
  • Proven experience advising on legal matters including government relations, contracting, business transaction compliance, provider relationships, employment matters, medical staff issues, and tax exemption—specific to Colorado's regulatory environment
  • Experience providing medical-legal guidance related to informed consent, patient rights, privacy, disclosures to law enforcement, and federal/state regulatory requirements

Responsibilities:
Strategic Legal Leadership
  • Serve as General Counsel and key executive advisor to the CEO, Board of Directors, and Senior Leadership.
  • Lead the Legal, Risk Management, and Compliance departments, including staffing, performance management, budgeting, and long-term planning.
  • Oversee the drafting, review, and negotiation of contracts, policies, agreements, and corporate/medical staff bylaws.
  • Manage organizational responses to federal and state agencies (EEOC, CDPHE, OCR, OIG, and others).
  • Provide legal oversight for major transactions including joint ventures, acquisitions, affiliations, and service line agreements.
  • Select and manage outside counsel for litigation, complex transactions, and specialized legal matters.
  • Represent BCH in community, governmental, and professional settings.

Compliance & Risk Management Leadership
  • Provide executive oversight of BCH's compliance and risk programs.
  • Advise on regulatory requirements, operational policies, and mitigation strategies.
  • Lead the development and implementation of compliance initiatives, internal audits, peer review, and quality improvement processes.
  • Monitor and interpret regulatory and accreditation changes; ensure organizational readiness.
  • Oversee evaluation and resolution of legal claims; advise on settlement and litigation strategy.
  • Direct the organization's insurance portfolio, including policy review and procurement.
