Position Summary
: VP, Assistant General Counsel & Claims Counsel's primarily responsibility is working with liability claims on coverage letters and claims analysis. Ensure sound litigation management practices are employed that protect the interests of GNY's policyholders, provide superior customer experience tailored to meet our policyholders' specific needs, and minimize litigation exposure.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with Claims to draft coverage position letters to putative insureds upon receipt of a claim.
  • Reinforce and support the Litigation Services and overall Claims mission, strategies and key business objectives through effective communication and action.
  • Assist General Counsel on legal issues and research. Prepare and provide seminars to claims departments, underwriting, and others
  • Leverage reporting, management information and analytics to help identify trends and opportunities to timely recognize exposures that require additional management intervention and resources to achieve optimal litigation outcomes.
  • Collaborate with all disciplines within the legal organization, including defense counsel and coverage counsel, on litigation strategy and risk transfer.
  • Participates in special projects and performs additional duties as required.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Minimum 8 years insurance and litigation experience in matters including coverage litigation, appeals, and/or insurance regulatory compliance at a firm and/or in-house required.
  • A background in commercial insurance coverage and litigation preferred.
  • Experience working as a Claims Counsel or Claims Attorney at an insurance company, preferably with expertise in Commercial Claims.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, both legal and non-legal.

Skills:
  • Legal and coverage analysis, including general contract review.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Up-to-date understanding of the key legal issues germane to an organization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
  • Proficiency in managing multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders.
  • Trial and/or appellate experience.
  • Experience handling bad faith or extra-contractual litigation against an insurance company.
  • Ability to do electronic research; write about complicated legal issues precisely and persuasively.

The salary range for this role is $153,800 - $303,700. The listed annual salary range posted for this position is subject to change and may vary depending on performance, education, experience, skills, geographic location, travel requirements, demonstrated proficiency in the competencies required for the role and business needs. Base pay is just one component of GNY's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards include eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus based on performance.
