Description:
Position Summary: VP, Assistant General Counsel's primary responsibility is working with liability claims and outside counsel on appeals, dispositive motions, and motions in limine in premises liability and New York Labor Law claims.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review and analyze summary judgment decisions for merits of a potential appeal;
- Draft and argue appeals on behalf of GNY's insureds;
- Collaborate with Liability Claims and outside counsel to revise appeals and dispositive motions; and
- Assist General Counsel and Liability Claims on legal issues and research.
- Participates in special projects and performs additional duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Minimum 8 years insurance and litigation experience including appeals with reported decisions.
- Experience working in both private appellate practice and as insurance in-house appellate counsel preferred.
Skills:
- Extensive, demonstrable experience in evaluating, drafting, and arguing appeals.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
- Proficiency in managing multiple appeals, motions and trial filings.
Other Requirements:
Ability to do electronic research; write about complicated legal issues precisely and persuasively.
