SLLDA is an independent non-profit legal organization funded by Salt Lake County and other municipalities for the purpose of protecting the constitutional rights of indigent individuals who are accused of crimes.

We are currently expanding our team and seeking both entry-level and experienced criminal defense attorneys.

Entry-Level Trial Attorney Designed for attorneys licensed with the Utah State Bar who have three (3) years or less of practice experience, and a demonstrated interest in public defense through internships, clinics, or volunteer work.
  • The Experience: You will begin your litigation career in the Justice Courts, receiving intensive, hands-on mentoring.
  • The Development: You will learn the art of client interviewing, case assessment, motion practice, jury selection, and trial advocacy.
  • The Goal: This structured training environment is designed to prepare you to confidently transition to representing clients on serious felony matters in the Third District Court.

Experienced Trial Attorney Designed for established litigators with a proven track record of handling complex criminal defense cases.
  • The Experience: You will step directly into representing clients facing serious felony charges in the Third District Court.
  • The Development: You will enjoy a high degree of courtroom autonomy, supported by our robust in-house investigative and social work teams.
  • The Goal: Champion holistic defense on high-stakes cases while helping to mentor, co-counsel, and inspire our incoming class of junior attorneys.

Position Requirements:
  • License: Active license to practice law from the Utah State Bar (Required).
  • Location: Must be able to commute to or relocate to Salt Lake City, UT 84111 prior to starting work.
