New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) seeks a dynamic and mission-driven Law Graduate/Staff Attorney to join its Community Access Programs Unit (CAPU). CAPU is an interdisciplinary team of attorneys, paralegals, and volunteers who provide civil legal information, resources, and representation to individuals who might not otherwise have access to legal services. The person in this temporary role will support Legal Hand East Harlem, operated by the New York Legal Assistance Group (LHEH).

This role will report to a Supervising Attorney and will be temporary in nature through December 31, 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Law Graduate/Staff Attorney will support NYLAG's work with Legal Hand East Harlem, including:
  • Working alongside the Supervising Attorney, ensuring smooth day-to-day operation of the Legal Hand East Harlem Call-In Center
  • Reviewing volunteers' notes and helping them to provide legal information to communities while also complying with relevant LHEH and NYLAG policies and procedures
  • Complete administrative duties including maintaining and updating NYLAG case management files, assisting with grant reporting as needed and developing, maintaining and updating Legal Hand East Harlem resources and database.
  • Supporting volunteer recruitment, onboarding, training, engagement, and retention efforts
  • Developing, maintaining and updating Legal Hand East Harlem resources and databases
  • Assisting with the provision of legal information and guided referrals on a range of civil legal issues, as appropriate
  • Participating in legal clinics, community presentations, stakeholder and partner coalitions, and outreach events
  • Creating a welcoming, inclusive, and support environment for Volunteers and Community members
  • Identifying emerging legal issues and community needs
  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications:
  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and at least one year of experience in civil legal services, including housing, public benefits, family law, immigration, or related areas.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice and serving low-income, underserved, and marginalized communities.
  • Experience working effectively and respectfully with individuals from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, presentation, organizational, and time management skills.
  • The ability to thrive in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment and build effective relationships with internal and external partners.
  • A strong interest in community empowerment and a commitment to making legal information accessible to all.
  • Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency strongly preferred.

Salary Range: NYLAG is a unionized workplace, and salaries are set pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement. The current salary range for this position is between $87,994 and $93,265.
