Overview:
Provides legal counsel and advice on a wide range of legal issues affecting the university. Responsibilities include supporting the management of endowments, investments, healthcare, and research activities, as well as handling complex transactions, regulatory compliance, and corporate governance. This role involves drafting and negotiating agreements, advising on legal and regulatory matters, and collaborating with university leadership, faculty, and staff to ensure compliance with laws and regulations. The Assistant General Counsel works both independently and as part of a team of in-house counsel to support the university's mission and strategic objectives.

Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Outstanding analytical, negotiating, drafting, and writing ability, with the capability to provide practical legal advice. Admission to the Connecticut bar at the time of, or within one year of, hire.
  • Proven ability in contract review, drafting, negotiation, and project management, with demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication.
  • Interpersonal skills that foster successful interaction with a diverse array of colleagues, clients, and leaders at all levels. Ability to manage multiple tasks and initiatives, prioritizing work independently in a high-performing environment.
  • High degree of personal integrity, sound judgment, and a commitment to accountability. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proven ability in legal and non-legal research, with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience in investment management legal and regulatory compliance, particularly in fund formation for private equity, venture capital, or real assets.
  • Experience with federal and state regulatory bodies and knowledge of healthcare or research regulatory issues.
  • Proven experience with drafting complex agreements and creating standard agreements. Expertise in securities regulations, partnership and international tax, and ERISA is advantageous.
  • LLM in tax and experience with structuring, drafting, and negotiating agreements related to charitable gifts.
  • Experience working in a university or academic medical center setting, with a broad legal skill set that includes corporate governance, compliance, and transactional matters.

Principal Responsibilities:
1. Interprets legal regulations and University policies and procedures. 2. Assists in the handling of administrative and legal proceedings before federal and state agencies and courts. 3. Negotiates, reviews, drafts and interprets contracts. 4. Negotiates and drafts the settlement of claims and/or litigation. 5. Researches and drafts memoranda, opinions and correspondence on legal issues. 6. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
J.D. and a minimum of 3 years' experience in a related area.
