Why does the job exist?
This position will provide assignments and direct supervision to Santa Fe based attorneys. Provide legal advice and represent the Department and all of its divisions in administrative and environmental law-related matters. Provide advanced and complex legal work as well as provide direct legal services to the Department and Divisions, including division directors, division management, bureaus and technical staff, and provide legal and policy advice regarding complex situations involving environmental litigation matters. Handle a complex and considerable legal workload for the Department to include conducting legal review of Contracts, Memorandums of Understanding and Agreements, and Joint Power Agreements.

Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
  • Practice of Environmental, Administrative, and Regulatory Law
  • Superb writing skills
  • Drafting regulations
  • Negotiating settlements
  • Representing clients
  • Working on multiple tasks under tight deadlines

Minimum Qualification:
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law and five (5) years of experience in the practice of law. Must be licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license.

Employment Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course certification.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required.
