Description:

Job Summary:
LASMNY is seeking an experienced domestic relations attorney to serve as Supervising Attorney for our work with survivors of intimate partner violence. This is an opportunity to lead and mentor a dedicated team while helping survivors and their children achieve safety, stability, and independence.

The Supervising Attorney oversees matrimonial and family law representation for survivors, including divorce, custody and visitation, child support, and related civil matters. Survivors of intimate partner violence make up nearly a quarter of the clients LASMNY serves, and this position helps ensure they receive skilled, trauma-informed advocacy.

Survivors often face several connected problems at once, including housing instability, loss of income or public benefits, and debt created through economic abuse. The Supervising Attorney leads a holistic approach that looks beyond the family law matter, working with LASMNY's other practice areas and with domestic violence service providers to address the full range of needs that affect a survivor's safety and long-term stability.

The Supervising Attorney supervises and evaluates attorneys and staff, carries a caseload, and ensures compliance with Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations, grant requirements, and LASMNY policies. This is one position, which may be based in either our Utica or Syracuse office.

Essential Job Duties:
  • Supervise attorneys and support staff representing survivors of intimate partner violence in orders of protection, divorce, custody and visitation, child support, and related civil matters.
  • Manage the team's caseload by assigning new matters, balancing workloads, and conducting regular case reviews to ensure effective, high-quality representation.
  • Train, mentor, and support staff, fostering professional growth and maintaining a supportive, healthy work environment.
  • Conduct employee work performance evaluations and address work performance concerns in a timely and effective manner.
  • Maintain an active caseload, providing advice, negotiation, and litigation services in Family Court, Supreme Court, and Integrated Domestic Violence (IDV) parts.
  • Ensure the delivery of culturally responsive, trauma-informed legal services that prioritize client safety and well-being.
  • Lead holistic representation by screening clients for related legal needs, such as housing, public benefits, consumer debt, and economic abuse, and coordinating with LASMNY's other practice areas and community partners to address them.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with domestic violence service providers, human services agencies, community organizations, the courts, and the private bar to strengthen referrals and coordinated services.
  • Oversee program administration, including grant reporting, compliance, timekeeping, file maintenance, case management, and accurate recordkeeping.
  • Conduct community outreach and legal education for survivors, advocates, service providers, and other stakeholders.
  • Stay current on developments in family law and intimate partner violence and maintain required Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits.

Professional Standards
  • Demonstrate the highest level of professionalism and discretion when handling confidential and sensitive client information, including information that affects client safety.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with clients, staff, attorneys, court personnel, agency staff, and community partners.

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Adapt to new technologies and systems, including legal research tools and case management software.
  • Comply with all Legal Services Corporation regulations, LASMNY policies and procedures, and grant-based reporting requirements.
  • Perform additional responsibilities and duties as assigned by a supervisor based on agency needs.

Required Qualifications:
