Experience: 2 to 5 years in state and local tax law

Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of New York State and local tax laws.
  • Knowledge of multistate tax principles, including nexus, apportionment, and/or combined reporting.
  • Experience in administrative appeal work with New York's Division of Tax Appeals.
  • Experience with residency planning and/or audit work is a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team that includes both attorney and business services professionals.

Responsibilities:
  • Advise clients on an array of state and local tax issues, including personal income tax, corporate income/franchise tax, sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, and unclaimed property.
  • Represent clients in audits, administrative appeals, and litigations before state and local tax authorities, administrative appeals agencies, and state courts.
  • Prepare audit responses, administrative appeal filings, legal briefs and ruling requests.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda, client alerts and technical analyses for state and local tax matters.
  • Assist with state and local tax aspects of mergers, acquisitions, restructurings, and other corporate transactions.
  • Stay up to date on state and local tax laws and regulations.
  • Participate in client meetings and contribute to business development efforts, as appropriate.

Requirements:
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Excellent technical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other practice areas to provide comprehensive solutions to clients.

Salary: $127,500 to $175,000

A competitive compensation and comprehensive benefit package, including medical, dental, vision, life, long term disability, flexible spending, 401(k), Paid Time Off, pension plan, and more. At this time, the good faith estimate of the annual salary range for this position, if the successful applicant is based in Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, or New York City, is $127,500 to $175,000. This range is not applicable to other locations.
