Description:
African Services Committee (ASC) is a recognized leader in providing high-quality representation to non-citizens in all five boroughs of New York City, particularly members of the African diaspora. Our staff of over 40 employees provides holistic legal services, housing, case management, health (including mental health), nutrition and ESOL services.The housing staff attorney will work with a team of two attorneys in collaboration with our housing department, which provides housing placement services for clients. The housing staff attorney will also work in coordination with our social services department to address clients' landlord/tenant issues.
The entitlement section will involve reviewing regulations. advising on eligibility related to benefits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review intakes and identify case issues.
- Provide consultation and advice to low-income clients on landlord/tenant issues.
- Maintain and manage docket of housing cases.
- Represent clients in landlord/tenant cases.
- Maintain accurate records in electronic databases and spreadsheets.
- Interpreting and applying federal and state laws like HIPAA to ensure compliance and eligibility to benefits.
- Assisting client to access benefits they are entitled to.
Requirements:
- Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and admission to the New York State Bar.
- A minimum of two years experience in landlord/tenant law and entitlements.
- Knowledge of Prucol status a plus.
- Knowledge of New York State residential landlord/tenant law.
- Knowledge of New York State Housing Court rules.
- Experience working in the non-profit sector.
- Strong writing, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to effectively manage all aspects of the case from intake to conclusion.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to cultural issues of African, Caribbean, and other refugees and immigrants.
- Fluency in Spanish and/or French required.
