ISLA is a legal services organization that defends the rights of our immigrant communities and advocates for just and humane immigration policy. We are the only legal services organization in Louisiana dedicated to representing detained adults in the region under a universal representation model. We also provide services nationally under the Legal Access Services for Reunified Families (LASRF) Program and Nationally Qualified Representative Program (NQRP). We are currently seeking a staff attorney to join our small team in New Orleans. This position would focus on removal defense for immigrants detained in Louisiana and would also include work on our non-detained programs.Job Responsibilities:
- Provide representation to detained immigrants in removal proceedings
- Conduct initial client intake/consultations and evaluate eligibility for relief from removal
- Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential case files and notes
- Stay up to date on rapidly changing immigration laws and policies
- Comply with data management and program reporting requirements
- Prepare and file necessary legal documents, including motions, briefs, and applications for relief
- Collaborate with other attorneys and support staff
- Conduct community outreach activities and participate in advocacy efforts
- Some travel, evening, and weekend work is required
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Skills:
- J.D. from ABA certified law school or international equivalent OR qualified to undertake the DOJ Accreditation process
- Willingness to pass the Louisiana Bar Exam within one year of employment OR willingness to apply for DOJ Accreditation within six months of employment
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish required
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to work independently
- Commitment to providing quality legal representation to vulnerable communities
- Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights
- Experience with immigration law preferred
- Valid driver's license
- Must be willing and able to pass FBI and other background checks
