About the Justice and Diversity Center of BASF:
JDC is a non-profit organization that provides free legal services through its staff and volunteers to low-income Bay Area residents. Each year more than 1,600 volunteer attorneys, legal assistants, and law students work with JDC staff to serve nearly 7,500 indigent clients. JDC's holistic advocacy approach seeks to address the social service and legal needs of clients.
About the Job:
The Immigrant Legal Defense Program (ILDP) of The Justice and Diversity Center is the legal lead for the San Francisco Immigrant Legal Defense Collaborative (SFILDC). Along with 15 partner agencies, SFILDC has offered full scope legal representation before the San Francisco Immigration Court for nearly 2,000 San Francisco residents. We are excited to hire a Staff Attorney who will be responsible for representing San Francisco residents in removal proceedings. This is a hybrid role that requires a minimum of 2 days in person at the JDC office and/or the Immigration Court per week. On occasion, your presence may be required for other matters such as clinics, community events, training, presentations and other essential meetings.
The duties and responsibilities commensurate with the role of the Staff Attorney, include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following tasks:
- Provide full-scope removal defense representation with an active caseload of 20-30 clients
- Support unrepresented community members with limited scope and pro se services
- Participate in JDC's Attorney of the Day Program (AOD) by providing limited scope representation to unrepresented individuals appearing before the immigration court
- Participate in the San Francisco Rapid Response Network as an on-call attorney responder
- Attend regular meetings with other SFILDC partners on behalf of JDC
- Help draft and edit legal protocols, templates and other legal materials for SFILDC partners
- Maintain accurate and timely records in JDC's case management systems to comply with grant reporting requirements
- Support community outreach and clinical activities as needed.
- Support the coordination of the SFILDC annual retreat
- Review legal filings prepared by non-attorney staff
- Other programmatic work as needed to support the ILDP and JDC
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Licensed attorney with 0-4 years relevant legal experience, recent law school graduates with bar results pending. License to practice law may be in any US jurisdiction.
- Recent law school graduates should include any immigration related coursework or volunteer work in their application
Skills and Requirements:
- Working professional capacity in English and Spanish required. Proficiency in other languages is also a plus.
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in a culturally competent manner.
- Ability to appear in person at the San Francisco and Concord Immigration Courts
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), familiarity with Google Suite
