Position Summary:
New Hampshire Legal Assistance (NHLA) seeks an attorney with significant litigation experience to join our nonprofit law firm as a Staff Attorney. The Staff Attorney will play a leadership role in developing and executing complex federal and state impact litigation, including class actions and appeals. In addition to supervising and participating in impact work, Staff Attorney may also handle individual cases as permitted by their litigation workload.

Office space for the Staff Attorney is available in NHLA's Concord, Berlin, or Claremont NH offices. NHLA has a remote work policy under which two days per week of remote work is typically approved. For this position, we are open to the possibility of primarily remote work for an experienced attorney, with the understanding that significant in-person work (such as meeting with clients in New Hampshire and accompanying and/or appearing on behalf of clients in court proceedings and at appointments in New Hampshire and Massachusetts) is required. Regular in-state travel is required. All NHLA staff members are provided with the necessary equipment (such as laptop computers) to work remotely. Occasional travel out of state, for example to national conferences, is anticipated. Travel reimbursement including mileage is provided.

Duties:
  • Work with clients, community partners, and NHLA subject matter experts to identify and prioritize civil legal issues impacting large groups of clients;
  • Investigate and analyze civil legal issues for possible litigation;
  • Develop and implement litigation strategies;
  • Lead and co-counsel major cases in state and federal court, including class actions and appeals;
  • Oversee and coordinate litigation teams, including NHLA staff members, aligned public interest law firm staff, and pro bono partners;
  • Train and mentor attorneys and advocates to strengthen NHLA's litigation capacity; and
  • Participate as a team member in the Staff Attorney's assigned office.
  • Qualifications and Competencies:
  • Admission to the New Hampshire Bar Association, or eligibility for admission;
  • Admission to the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire, or eligibility for admission;
  • At least 10 years of prior litigation experience, or substantial institutional reform/civil rights litigation experience;
  • Public interest litigation experience strongly preferred;
  • Ability to travel on a regular basis, including extensively within New Hampshire;
  • Current technology skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and Adobe;
  • Familiarity with litigation technology tools strongly preferred; and
  • Ability to speak Spanish or another language in addition to English is a plus.

Position Salary/Benefits:

This is a full-time position. Full-time is defined as 37.5 hours per week. This position is considered exempt for the purpose of federal wage/hour law.

The anticipated salary for the position depends on prior law-related work experience, expected to range from $91,053 per year (for candidates with 10 years of prior law-related work experience) to $110,000 per year (for candidates with 19 or more years of prior law-related work experience). Additional compensation of $1,500 per year is available for staff members who are fluent in at least one language in addition to English and willing to use the second language in their work. NHLA is a statewide nonprofit law firm that helps low-income and older individuals and families with civil legal problems that impact their basic needs, such as housing, economic security, and safety from violence. As a civil legal aid provider, we represent clients in all of New Hampshire's state and federal courts, as well as before administrative agencies. We advocate for low-income and older people in the New Hampshire Legislature and offer training and education to our client communities as well as fellow service providers. NHLA is a cornerstone New Hampshire nonprofit marking our 55th anniversary in 2026.
