Description:

A 501(C)(3) Non-Profit Organization Legal seeks a part-time Staff Attorney to support the delivery of legal aid to COVID-19 and long COVID patients. The Staff Attorney will be responsible for handling client matters involving short-term and long-term disability insurance benefits, typically governed by ERISA. The Staff Attorney is expected to work an average of 10 hours per week.

Responsibilities:
The Staff Attorney will:
  • Conduct client intake to assess their needs and our capacity to help.
  • Provide legal services to clients to help them obtain their disability insurance benefits.
  • Represent clients during the application and administrative appeal process.
  • Counsel clients on how to strengthen their application and/or appeal with additional medical documentation.
  • Connect clients with external resources, when appropriate.
  • Report on client outcomes and impact.

Qualifications:
  • Licensed to practice law in any U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Awareness of long COVID and an understanding of the common symptoms and limitations associated with this condition.
  • Experience representing clients with long COVID in short-term and long-term disability insurance claims.
  • Experience using Clio for legal practice management.
  • Experience working in a remote law firm environment.
  • 3+ years managing short-term and long-term disability insurance claims during the administrative appeal process.
  • Experience bringing ERISA litigation in federal court is highly preferred.
  • Exceptional candidates will have experience working with non-profit organizations.

The Staff Attorney will work remotely from their home office.
