Position Summary & Responsibilities: StaffAttorney

The Kansas Department of Labor seeks a highly motivated, detail-oriented attorney to join its legal team. This position offers a dynamic opportunity to engage in meaningful public service while handling complex and impactful legal matters across multiple areas of administrative and civil law.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct in-depth research and analysis of complex legal issues for the Office of the Secretary and various agency divisions. Prepare comprehensive research memoranda and legal guidance for review by the Chief Counsel, ensuring accuracy, thoroughness, and identification of related legal considerations.
  • Represent the Agency in litigation before state and federal district courts, appellate courts, and administrative tribunals. Responsibilities include defending agency actions under the Kansas Judicial Review Act related to unemployment insurance determinations, claims under the Kansas Wage Claims Act, and collections through the Kansas Debt Setoff Program; initiating adversary proceedings in bankruptcy matters; and enforcing agency-issued subpoenas.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, data sharing agreements, memoranda of understanding, and other binding legal instruments to safeguard the Agency's interests. Provide well-reasoned legal analysis and collaborate with agency divisions and the Office of the Secretary to ensure compliant and effective execution of agreements.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
  • Active license to practice law in the State of Kansas

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with the Kansas Employment Security Law, the Kansas Wage Payment Act, and/or the Kansas Judicial Review Act
  • Litigation experience
