The disAbility Law Center of Virginia is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of staff attorney to advocate on behalf of children and adults with disabilities. The disAbility Law Center of Virginia is the state's designated protection and advocacy system. Our mission is to protect and advance legal, human, and civil rights of persons with disabilities; combat and prevent abuse, neglect, and discrimination; and promote independence, choice, and self-determination by persons with disabilities.

This position will provide legal advice, representation and general advocacy services. Duties for this position may include developing and leading systemic disability rights reform efforts, individual representation of clients in formal and informal legal and administrative proceedings, providing conflict resolution, mediation and other intervention strategies, monitoring and investigating instances of abuse, neglect or exploitation, assisting with outreach and training on disability rights issues, providing technical assistance and short term legal assistance, supervising non-attorney staff, and other duties as needed. Attorneys of all levels of experience will have the opportunity to appear in administrative and court proceedings.

The ideal candidate will:
  • Be licensed and in good standing to practice law, or be willing to become licensed, in the state of Virginia
  • Have the ability to assist with or supervise litigation in administrative proceedings and in state and federal courts
  • Have experience in disability law or civil rights
  • Have familiarity with the disability services system in Virginia
  • Have independent problem solving skills
  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrate sensitivity for people with disabilities and respect for cultural differences
  • Be passionate about promoting and advocating for independence, informed choice, and self-determination for people with disabilities, with a commitment to community integration and to social justice.

The successful candidate will be required to apply for a national security clearance.
