About the Role: High-Impact Advocacy
The Staff Attorney is a pivotal member of our Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP). This isn't just "public interest" work—it is strategic advocacy at the intersection of law and health. Our team recently secured a landmark win from the United States Supreme Court, demonstrating our commitment to taking on complex legal challenges to protect the rights of those living with HIV and the LGBTQ+ community.

You will handle a robust caseload ranging from direct client representation to strategic impact litigation, ensuring that our clients' health outcomes are never compromised by legal instability.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Litigation & Representation: Represent clients in state and federal courts, as well as before administrative tribunals, in matters involving housing, Social Security benefits, discrimination, and privacy rights.
  • Strategic Advocacy: Collaborate on high-impact litigation and systemic advocacy initiatives to shift local and state-wide policy.
  • Client Counsel: Conduct thorough investigations, client interviews, and provide sophisticated legal advice across a variety of civil matters.
  • Drafting: Prepare high-quality briefs, pleadings, and motions for complex litigation.
  • Estate Planning: Prepare Wills and Powers of Attorney to ensure long-term security and permanency planning for clients.
  • Community Leadership: Lead outreach and education initiatives to empower our community and bridge the gap between healthcare and legal protection.

Qualifications:
  • Licensure: JD from an accredited law school and an active Louisiana State Bar license in good standing.
  • Experience: Demonstrated commitment to civil rights, health law, or public interest litigation.
  • Skills: Exceptional legal research and writing skills. You should be comfortable navigating both the courtroom and the clinic.
  • Domain Expertise: Experience in housing claims, Social Security disability, discrimination law, or estate planning is strongly preferred.
  • Commitment: A dedication to health equity and serving marginalized populations, including the LGBTQ+ community and persons living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Logistics: Ability to travel is required.
