Position Available: Staff Attorney, Housing Unit of DC 37 Municipal Employees Legal Services (MELS)

Salary Range: $63,050.00 - $90,042.00 per annum

Requirements: Must be admitted to practice law n NY State, Two years housing experience preferred

Bi-Lingual Spanish language speakers encouraged to apply

DC 37 represents workers who care for the sick, the children, the elderly, maintain bridges, parks, roads and subways. staff the hospitals, schools, libraries, social service centers and city colleges, do clerical work, the maintenance work and the technical work that keep New York City running. Municipal Employees Legal Services (MELS) is a benefit which provides free legal services to employees and retirees covered under the Union's collective bargaining agreement. MELS is funded through employer contributions to DC 37's Health and Security Plan.

MELS attorneys are a vital part of an interdisciplinary team of lawyers, legal assistants and social workers who provide civil legal services to employees, retirees and their families in any of the five boroughs and Nassau, Suffolk , Westchester and Rockland counties. Our legal services include eviction and foreclosure defense, representation in family, matrimonial actions, consumer-debt-bankruptcy and administrative law matters, preparation of life planning documents and the purchase and sale of homes, coops and co

Attorneys on our Housing Unit provide court representation to tenants facing eviction from their homes, representation at NYCHA and HPD Mitchell Lama termination hearings and advice on landlord-tenant issues. Housing Attorneys are assigned to a particular county and receive hands on training and orientation from Supervising Attorneys and Senior Attorneys.
