Job Summary: Legal Aid Society's Guardian ad Litem Division has an opening for a staff attorney. A Guardian ad Litem is an attorney appointed by the court to advocate for the best interests of children in Juvenile and Family Court proceedings. This position primarily involves Juvenile court proceedings. Guardians ad Litem interact with judges, case managers, children and families and a variety of other professionals to work collaboratively to advocate for children. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to public interest law.Location: This position is located out of the Vel R. Phillips Juvenile Justice Center in Wauwatosa, WI. Travel within and outside Milwaukee County will be required.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Represents the best interests of children during all phases of litigation including motions, trials, mediation and appeals;
- Works in partnership with staff assessment professionals to investigate cases;
- Understands the vast problems of alcohol and drugs, mental health, family violence,unemployment and educational deficits and the impact on families;
- Attends court hearings and may make written and oral recommendations to the Court asrequired. Attends case plan meetings and other proceedings involving the child as anadvocate for the child. Maintains an accurate and up-to-date calendar of hearings.
- Compiles, organizes and maintains accurate and up-to-date case files, and closes files whencomplete. Adheres to record and case confidentiality/access rules.
- Identifies and is knowledgeable regarding resources for treatment and other necessaryservices for children and families.
- Attends program staff meetings and continuing legal education courses as required.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate (JD)
- Requires Admission to the Wisconsin State Bar
- Compliance with Chapter 35 of the Wisconsin Supreme Court Rules
- 1 year of relevant working experience, preferred
- Requires excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate withchildren, families and child welfare stakeholders.
- Must be able to pass a Criminal Background Check.
- Knowledge of juvenile and family judicial process, rules and law, including Wisconsin Statutes.
- Knowledge of child development, and of the issues and dynamics that surround juvenile and family cases, such as child abuse, domestic abuse, chemical dependency, mental health and developmental disabilities.
- Ability to become proficient using a computer, laptop and relevant computer software programs and databases.
- Ability to use basic office equipment such as fax, scanner and copy machine.
