The Position: We are looking for a full-time staff attorney to be based in MLSA's Helena office. The full-time pay we're offering is $60,500 -$74,000, depending on experience.
  • MLSA has a full-time, 35 hour work week.
  • MLSA offers company-paid health, dental, vision and life insurance; a 403(b) retirement plan; and eligibility for a health reimbursement (HRA) or health savings account (HSA). MLSA contributes $1,600 to employees each year for an HRA or HSA;
  • MLSA is a Public Student Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) organization and additionally, attorney staff can be eligible for up to three separate Loan Repayment Assistance programs run through the Legal Services Corporation, Montana Justice Foundation, and MLSA. This additional amount for student loans can be anywhere from $2,400 - $14,200;
  • We also offer a generous paid leave package, including 3 weeks of annual (10 hrs per month) in the first year, sick leave, and a wellness leave program;
  • And if you move from another town in Montana to join us, we offer up to $500 for relocation reimbursement (or $1,000 if you move from out of state).

Requirements:
  • Law Degree.
  • A willingness to assume a varied case load.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, to motivate others, and to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people with varying perspectives, and experience and expertise.
  • Prior legal services experience is preferred, but a demonstrated commitment to social justice through volunteer activities and internships is valued.
  • Overnight and day travel to surrounding communities is required as needed.

Responsibilities:
  • Interview, meet with, advise, and represent eligible clients on civil matters.
  • Conduct safety planning with clients and connect them to appropriate resources.
  • Compose correspondence, pleadings and other documents.
  • Develop law related educational programs and materials directed to the client community or agencies regarding the legal rights of survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.
  • Research the law and prepare memoranda.
  • Handle all aspects of a client's legal matter, including preparing pleadings, negotiation, mediation and trial work.

You'll be based in Montana's largest city, Billings, known as “Montana's Trailhead”. Enjoy easy access to Yellowstone National Park and great skiing near the small mountain town of Red Lodge. Over 40 miles of hiking and biking trails beckon just outside your door. MLSA's office is located in the heart of downtown Billings within walking distance of great restaurants and bars.
