Primary Responsibilities:
  • Providing legal support and guidance related to behavioral health and substance use disorder benefit offerings
  • Collaborating across all functions to deliver sound and actionable legal advice to effectively achieve business objectives while protecting the company's interests
  • Proactively identifying, managing, and resolving legal issues in a manner consistent with business philosophy, mission and strategy, and in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
  • Researching and assessing legal and regulatory matters, preparing internal written positions, advising decision makers on risk, options and recommending courses of action
  • Assisting in the review, preparation and negotiation of various products, documents and contracts associated with Optum business
  • Participating in and leading negotiations with key customers and vendors
  • Developing best practices for addressing emerging legal and business risks
  • Supporting Optum in the development and delivery of new products
  • Working in partnership with the Compliance team
  • Counseling senior management on strategic business initiatives
  • Overseeing external law firms as needed
  • Fostering key regulatory relationships

The successful candidate will possess strong verbal and written communication skills, sound judgment and business instincts. The ability to collaborate and operate in a matrixed environment will be important qualities for the successful candidate. Prior law firm and in-house experience are desired, as is prior leadership experience.

Required Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school; admitted to at least one state bar in the U.S.
  • 8+ years of work experience as a lawyer
  • Experience successfully handling complex business and legal issues in a fast-paced, matrixed, evolving business environment
  • Proficient with technology

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in health care law, including experience with administration of behavioral health and substance use disorder benefits.
  • Demonstrated understanding of regulatory requirements related to behavioral health and substance use disorder benefits
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated successful leadership skills with strong ownership mentality, able to effectively collaborate with legal and business colleagues and efficiently drive work to completion
  • Ability to devise business-friendly, pragmatic business solutions with effective presentation of risks and anticipated outcomes
  • Ability to prioritize work with a sense of urgency, pivot seamlessly as needed, and work with agility to deliver high quality, timely work product
  • Sound, practical legal judgment, intellectual creativity, and problem-solving skills
  • High EQ and exceptional organization skills and attention to detail
