The Office of Technology and Innovation houses the Office of Information Privacy, which works to protect New Yorkers' identifying information. OIP is headed by the City's Chief Privacy Officer, who leads and implements the City's privacy strategy and policy, advises agencies on federal, state, and local privacy law, and counsels on citywide data-sharing practices.
Supporting the Executive Director, Strategic Affairs, the Special Counsel, Information Privacy will:
- Provide strategic guidance on privacy-related citywide initiatives;
- Collaborate with program and technology teams to support privacy protection in the development and implementation of analytics and emerging technologies;
- Advise on privacy-related legislative matters, including drafting and reviewing prospective legislation and related engagements;
- Support the drafting, negotiation, and management of privacy-related contract terms, including application to use of online analytics and artificial intelligence;
- Coordinate with OIP analysis and program teams to develop and deliver both scalable and targeted privacy training programs and policies;
- Support the external and public-facing activities of the office, including media, national, and international privacy organization engagements;
- Liaise with the Mayor's Office on privacy matters;
- Monitor and analyze evolving privacy-related regulations, industry standards, and best practices; and
- Execute other projects and initiatives as required.
Hours/Shift
Day - Due to the necessary management duties of this position in a 24/7 operation, candidate may be required to be on call and/or work various shifts such as weekends and/or nights/evenings.

Admission to The New York State Bar; and Four Years of Recent Full-Time Responsible, Relevant, Satisfactory Legal Experience Subsequent to Admission to Any Bar, Eighteen Months of Which Must Have Been in The Supervision of Other Attorneys, in An Administrative, Managerial or Executive Capacity, or Performing Highly Complex and Significant Legal Work.
Incumbents Must Remain Members of The New York State Bar in Good Standing for The Duration of This Employment.

The Preferred Candidate Should Possess 7 Years of Experience in Privacy, Data Protection, or Information Governance, Ideally Within Government, a Regulatory Body, or A Highly Regulated Industry and Some of The Following: - Strong Ability to Work Across Teams, Manage Multiple Projects, and Operate in Dynamic, High-Pressure Environments - Creative Problem-Solving Skills to Assist Stakeholders in Fulfilling Operational Needs Factoring Privacy Protection - Ability to Analyze and Translate Complex Legal and Policy Concepts Into Clear, Actionable Guidance for Diverse Audiences - Experience Drafting Privacy-Related Policies and Agreements Governing the Collection, Retention, and Disclosure of Identifying Information - Strong Understanding of Legislative Processes, Interagency Coordination, and Complex Policy Environments - Ability to Navigate Complex Bureaucracies, Build Consensus, and Adapt to Evolving Priorities and - Cipp-Us or Equivalent Privacy Certification.
