Description:The Solicitor General fellowship provides a recent law school graduate or judicial law clerks the opportunity to serve for a year in the Office of the Attorney General. Fellows will assist with all aspects of the Office's work, including performing legal research, taking depositions, drafting briefs, and appearing in court. Fellows will work primarily with the Solicitor General and his team, which handles the State's docket at the U.S. Supreme Court, constitutional challenges to state statutes, and other cases of statewide importance. The fellowship is an excellent opportunity for talented young attorneys to gain early substantive experience and contribute to high-impact cases. We expect fellows will handle at least one oral argument before a court of appeals.
Examples of Duties:
- Assist with trial and appellate litigation implicating state interests, including by researching legal issues, drafting briefs, and taking or defending depositions
- Research and draft amicus curiae briefs submitted on behalf of the State in both federal and state court
- Present and assist with the presentation of oral argument
- Analyze strategic or policy issues relevant to the Office's work
- Undertake other assigned tasks
Typical Skills and Qualifications
- Recent law-school graduate or judicial law clerk
- Admitted or seeking admission to the Indiana bar
- Excellent academic record
- Strong writing and analytical abilities
- Judicial clerkship preferred
