Our staff counsel team is currently seeking a Sr. Trial Attorney to work remote covering the west side of the state, primarily in Grand Rapids. This is a Full Time/Exempt role. Dual license with IN, IL or OH a plus.

Position Summary:
Investigates and manages cases of low, moderate and complex exposure in civil litigation from the inception of the lawsuit until conclusion through dismissal, settlement or trial. Responsible for handling cases in first party no-fault PIP, auto negligence, general liability, premises liability, dog bite, homeowners' claims and coverage matters. Works with a team of attorneys and adjusters to resolve claims as expeditiously and efficiently as possible.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
  • Handles a moderate caseload consisting of low to complex exposure no-fault PIP, auto negligence, general liability, premises liability, dog bite, homeowners' claims and coverage matters
  • Meets with claims professionals to resolve cases in the most cost effective manner
  • Answers and develops theories and affirmative defenses to incoming lawsuits
  • Engages in routine motion practice, discovery and research
  • Handles trials and arbitrations.
  • Periodically presents to claims partners on new developments in the law.

Essential Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum 15 years litigation experience; first chair trial experience required
  • Must have a valid driver's license, an acceptable MVR and an ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Admitted to the bar and must be licensed to practice law in the jurisdictions where assigned
  • Advocacy: Has the knowledge and ability to assist, defend or plead for another
  • Communication: Has a knowledge and ability to deliberately and precisely exchange thoughts and opinions with one or more persons and to effectively translate legal language and ideas into layman's terms
  • Organization Skills: Must have the ability to categorize and prioritize work and information to effectively maximize productivity Desired skills and experience: • Computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Word, Lexis/Westlaw, and daily management of e-mail and calendar • Able to work in a team environment with other attorneys, adjusters and other claims professionals and support staff
  • Investigative Skills: Has an ability to follow up step by step on inquiry or observation; to trace or track, search or examine with care and accuracy. Specifically, must take evidence that may be used in reaching a legal conclusion
  • Legal Research: Must demonstrate the ability to locate cases, treaties, codified laws and statutes aimed at the discovery and interpretation of law and to draw a reasonable and accurate conclusion or render an opinion there from
  • Courtroom Skills: Has appropriate courtroom behavior, attire and decorum and is familiar with the rules and regulations that govern proceedings and conduct in courts of law or other legal forums and tribunals.
