Position Summary:As an insurance defense attorney in our Michigan office, you will be part of a team providing legal representation to Hanover/Citizens' insureds and/or Hanover/Citizens Insurance before courts and arbitration panels in all aspects of litigation. You will investigate and manage cases of low, moderate, and complex exposure in civil litigation from the inception of the lawsuit until conclusion through dismissal, settlement or trial. You will be responsible for handling cases involving automobile negligence, general liability, no-fault PIP, homeowner liability and UM/UIM. You will work with a team of attorneys and adjusters to resolve claims as expeditiously and efficiently as possible.
In this role you will:
- Handle a moderate caseload consisting of low, moderate, and complex exposure in automobile negligence, general liability, no-fault PIP, homeowner liability, and UM/UIM matters.
- Meet with claims professionals to resolve cases in the most cost-effective manner.
- Answer and develop theories and affirmative defenses to incoming lawsuits.
- Engage in routine motion practice, discovery and legal research.
- Handle trials and arbitrations.
- Periodically present to claims partners on new developments in the law.
- Minimum 10 years litigation experience; trial experience a plus.
- Must have a valid driver's license, an acceptable MVR and an ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Admitted to the bar and must be licensed to practice law in the jurisdictions where assigned.
- Advocacy: Has the knowledge and ability to assist, defend or plead for another.
- Communication: Has a knowledge and ability to deliberately and precisely exchange thoughts and opinions with one or more persons and to effectively translate legal language and ideas into layman's terms.
- Organization Skills: Must have the ability to categorize and prioritize work and information to effectively maximize productivity
- Desired skills and experience: Computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Word, Lexis/Westlaw, and daily management of e-mail and calendar
- Able to work in a team environment with other attorneys, adjusters and other claims professionals and support staff.
- Investigative Skills: Has an ability to follow up step by step on inquiry or observation; to trace or track, search or examine with care and accuracy. Specifically, must take evidence that may be used in reaching a legal conclusion.
- Legal Research: Must demonstrate the ability to locate cases, treaties, codified laws and statutes aimed at the discovery and interpretation of law and to draw a reasonable and accurate conclusion or render an opinion there from.
- Courtroom Skills: Has appropriate courtroom behavior, attire and decorum and is familiar with the rules and regulations that govern proceedings and conduct in courts of law or other legal forums and tribunals.
