Description:
The Opportunity:Grafana Labs is seeking a Senior Product Counsel to join our dedicated, collaborative, and fast-growing legal team. The primary responsibility of the Senior Product Counsel will be to serve primarily as legal advisor to the Grafana Labs product and engineering teams regarding feature development, product launches, and strategy. This critical role will also support broader legal matters, which may include non-standard licensing deals, privacy, and other cross-functional matters.
The successful candidate will be a creative and analytical thinker who is highly detail oriented and embraces a business-oriented approach, with the ability to think strategically and establish a trusted advisor relationship with internal stakeholders.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Conduct legal risk assessments for product features throughout the feature lifecycle
- Review, advise, and negotiate a variety of agreements, including complex inbound and outbound licenses, data processing (GDPR, CCPA), information security, and other technology related agreements
- Develop scalable product review processes and legal playbooks
- Collaborate with cross-functional business teams on legal, regulatory, and corporate matters, such as licensing, data protection and privacy, and other matters.
- Partner closely with security and privacy teams on proactive program building as well as reactive responses
- Advise on governance and commercialization of AI features
- Contribute to the development of workflows and processes needed to efficiently scale the legal team, including usage of AI tools for productivity
- Assist with efforts around privacy-by-design, and security-by-design
- Assess IP risk associated with third-party software and embedded technologies
- Draft and negotiate complex software license agreements (OEM, white-label, embedded use, distribution models)
- Partner with the commercial legal team to ensure alignment between product capabilities and contractual commitments.
- JD and bar admission in good standing in at least one state in the U.S.
- 5+ years of technology related in-house legal experience with a software company (preferably in the SaaS industry)
- 8+ years of experience as a practicing attorney
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to maintain strong relationships with internal clients, with high level of client service
- Significant experience with data protection laws, open source, and AI regulation
- Experience negotiating non-standard and strategic licensing agreements
- Ability to balance risk mitigation with business speed
- Ability to distill and prioritize complex and urgent matters
- Sound business acumen and with ability to recognize and balance risk appropriately
- Strong communication, negotiation, and presentation skills
