The Opportunity:We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Product Counsel to join our Legal team based in our Plymouth, MN office on a hybrid schedule. The Senior Product Counsel serves as the in-house legal expert regarding the company's insurance products for the businesses they support. In this role, they will lead the Company's capturing of coverage and case law knowledge from internal and external sources and will implement the necessary changes in the company's insurance products to address any coverage and case law developments. The Senior Product Counsel is also charged with educating internal constituents regarding coverage and case law developments and advising on associated coverage implications. They are also responsible for the implementation of regulatory and compliance developments in their assigned business lines. This role is critical to the company's customer focus and ability to achieve profitability and growth objectives. Some of the Senior Product Counsel responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Generates product development strategies based on market, regulatory, and legal developments in the insurance industry. Communicates strategies to legal and underwriting management.
- Develops familiarity with line of business regulatory and case law developments through participation on relevant committees and leveraging other resources, and communicating significant developments to internal constituents.
- Provides legal advice on coverage-related issues based on research and analysis.
- Drafts and revises coverage forms, endorsements, notices, and other policy documents to ensure underwriting intent is accurately captured.
- Drafts account-specific endorsements requested by business-unit underwriters.
- Drafts and revises coverage forms, endorsements, notices, and other policy documents to respond to regulatory or legal changes or business-driven changes for business unit-specific product.
- As needed, provides support for product filings by assisting with responses to objections and, if required, explanatory memoranda.
- Coordinates with functional constituents in the product development process, including Actuary, Claims, Enterprise Underwriting, and IT as needed to ensure efficient and accurate business unit product implementation.
- Identifies, raises, elevates and advises management regarding coverage issues that have or may have enterprise-wide impact or impact on the other businesses, including issues that may give rise to litigation, reputation, economic or regulatory risk.
- Trains underwriters on coverage language and coverage issues and reviews product marketing materials.
- Ability to demonstrate analytical, decision making, problem solving, and organizational skills.
- Must be able to communicate professionally and effectively using oral and written communication in various forms including video.
- Must be able to work both independently, as a member of a team, and have the ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals.
- Demonstrate proficiency with computer software including Microsoft Office suite and other systems utilized by the department.
